Today" is a song by American alternative rock band The Smashing Pumpkins, written by lead vocalist and guitarist Billy Corgan. The song, though seemingly upbeat, contains dark lyrics. Corgan wrote the song about a day in which he was having suicidal thoughts, exemplified by the reference to self-mutilation in the bridge
Official video for Smashing Pumpkins song "Today" from the album Siamese Dream. it/645khi Corgan said that the plot of the video for "Today" was inspired by a memory he had of an ice cream truck driver who, upon quitting his job, gave out his remaining stock of ice cream to the neighborhood children.
The second single from the second album Siamese Dream, 'Today' was the Smashing Pumpkins' breakthrough single. Despite only reaching 44 in the US mainstream chart and 28 in the UK, constant airplay and repeated rotation on MTV has made it one of the most recognisable songs of the 90s. Underneath the melody and seemingly carefree lyrics is a darker tale of Corgan's struggle with depression during the recording of 'Siamese Dream'. As he told Rolling Stone in October, 1993, "I didn't want to go outside. Today is the greatest Day I've ever known Can't live for tomorrow Tomorrow's much too long I'll burn my eyes out Before I get out I wante. iew full lyrics.
The Smashing Pumpkins demoed "Today" in Chicago, in autumn 1992. Bassist D'arcy Wretzky recalled, "Before and during the recording of 'Siamese Dream,' and during the writing process, things were kind of f ked up. I think we weren't mature enough not to take it out on each other. Wretzky and guitarist James Iha were breaking up, and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain had serious drug problems. Frontman Billy Corgan lost his apartment in a split with his long-term girlfriend, Chris Fabian, and thought of disbanding.

Siamese Dream is to Smashing Pumpkins as Green is to REM, if one is game for analogies. The albums pushed their respective bands to the top of the charts. Though REM has straddled the pop and art sensibilities of its music quite expertly, Smashing Pumpkins, it might be argued, lost the plot somewhere. Before Smashing Pumpkins (arguably) became irrelevant, the band released a number of singles containing some fairly amazing B-sides from the Siamese Dream recording sessions. Most of the B-sides would see release only in the .
Today" has appeared on several Smashing Pumpkins official releases, including the band's greatest hits album Rotten Apples and the box set Siamese Singles. A live version of "Today" performed in the band's hometown of Chicago was included on the 1994 video release Vieuphoria and on its companion album Earphoria, and was praised as "a triumphant recording" by Pitchfork's Chris Dahlen. A different live recording from Chicago appears on the promotional album Live in Chicago 2. 0. 95 and the song is featured. Today" has been included in a few compilation albums. The eighteenth volume of Indie Top 20, a Melody Maker-sponsored compilation series which serves as a "time capsule of . indie music", features "Today" as its fourth track
