The Optimist is the second studio album by English band New Young Pony Club. It was released on 5 March 2010 on the band's label The Numbers, distributed by the PIAS Entertainment Group. The album showcases a darker, more emotive sound for the band. The songs "Oh Cherie" and "Lost a Girl" were used, respectively, in the third and fourth episodes of the fourth season of Gossip Girl. All tracks written by Tahita Bulmer and Andy Spence, except where noted.

And then, we wake up in the morning Now we’ve had our fill and the glass is empty But when, I get down to the bottom My mind has not forgotten I’m an optimist, you’re a clean slate, maybe. It’s pale, the diary of forever And I’ll know full stop from your flawless entry Some fools, want to throw together Like spectators making better With the ground still hot when the shove is friendly. You have said, You have said Your name is not for me I try not to be Disappointed You have said, you have said Your name is not for me I try not to be Disappointed

The range on this album is colossal, even though its influences are still more or less paraded; take the title-track's whirling, steam-engine keyboard parts, transplanted straight from The Horrors' reinvention of My Bloody Valentine, and the PJ Harvey-recalling sadness on the album's ballad, Stone. But there's far more than mimicry on offer here; colossal key-changes and an audible sense of excitement become the album's revelation. The contrasts are ecstatic, setting in stone just how remarkable a comeback New Young Pony Club have pulled off. The Optimist is a super-smart pop album at the top of its game.
