Kei Akagi, best known for playing keyboards with Miles Davis and for being a fixture in the Los Angeles area (including the studios), mostly sticks to acoustic piano on this obscure trio/quartet date. Akagi wrote all nine selections, which he performs with either Bob Harrison or John Patitucci on bass, drummer Tom Brechtlein, and (on six of the pieces) Rick Margitza on tenor and soprano.
Kei Akagi (ケイ 赤城/赤城 恵 Akagi Kei, born March 16, 1953) is a Japanese American jazz pianist. In particular, he is known for his work with the Airto Moreira/Flora Purim group and in Miles Davis's band in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He was born in Japan, but lived in Cleveland, Ohio, for part of his childhood, until he moved back to Japan at the age of 12. He later returned to the United States at 22. He is associated with the Californian jazz scene at present.
Kei Akagi has long been a vastly underrated jazz pianist. On this stimulating quartet set with tenor saxophonist Rick Margitza, bassist Charles Fambrough, and drummer Willie Jones III, Akagi digs into five of his originals, Fambrough's "Bright Eyes," and a memorable and lengthy version of Wayne Shorter's "Lester Left Town. Margitza (whose playing on tenor and soprano sometimes hints strongly at John Coltrane) and the alert rhythm section inspire Akagi to some of his finest playing, stretching the hard bop tradition and creating fresh new music.
Kei Akagi (born 1953) is a Japanese American jazz pianist most known as a sideman. In particular he is known for his work in Miles Davis's band in the 1980s. He was born in Japan, but lived in Cleveland, Ohio for part of his childhood and then returned to the United States at 22. He is also a professor of music at the University of California, Irvine.
