Maria Callas, Commendatore OMRI (/ˈkæləs/; Greek: Μαρία Κάλλας; December 2, 1923 – September 16, 1977) was an American-born Greek soprano. She was one of the most renowned and influential opera singers of the 20th century. Many critics praised her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice and dramatic interpretations

Maria Callas la Divina. MARIA-LEONORA (Chicago, 1955). Group of 17 unsigned photos of Maria Callas at Teatro La Scala, Milan, in different roles including Medea, Fedora, Il Pirata, Macbeth, Lucia di Lammermoor, etc. Each one is approx. 5 x 6 inches, not stamped on verso, in excellent condition. Not sold individually.

Maria Callas's voice was never noted for its sheer beauty, but she was in her best form for this session and she knew exactly what to do with what she had. She might not make the distraught figure of Leonora rationally credible, but she knows more about acting with her voice than anyone this side of Sir John Gielgud. And she puts Leonora's emotions, her vulnerability, her whole-hearted, self-sacrificial love, squarely before the listener. Herbert von Karajan's conducting brings logical coherence to a work not noted for that quality. In short, this is vintage Callas,.

When Callas Rarities was first released in 1993, Gramophone wrote: 'Each item, each phrase almost, has something to be said about it: the whole collection makes essential listening'. The intention was to enable Callas retrain her voice after the vocal problems that had beset her at the end of the 1950s and in the process, produce some recordings suitable for commercial release. Performers: Maria Callas - soprano Orchestra del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, orchestra, Tullio Serafin, conductor Philharmonia Orchestra, Nicola Rescigno, conductor Philharmonia Orchestra, Antonio Tonini, conductor Monica Sinclair - contralto Alexander Young - tenor Philharmonia Orchestra & Chorus, Antonio Tonini, conductor Orchestre de la Société des Concerts du Conservatoire, orchestra, Nicola Rescigno, conductor Orchestre du Théâtre National de l’Opéra de Paris, orchestra, Nicola Rescigno, conductor.

Maria received her musical education in Greece at age 13 and later established her career in Italy. Forced to deal with the exigencies of 1940s wartime poverty and with near-sightedness that left her nearly blind onstage, she endured struggles and scandal over the course of her career. She turned herself from a heavy woman into a svelte and glamorous one after a mid-career weight loss, which might have contributed to her vocal decline and the premature end of her career.
