Energetic Cosmopolitan. Wayne Marshall, Ålborg Symphony Orchestra. But the Rhapsody in Blue that opens the proceedings is over the top, filled with herky-jerky shifts in tempo and other big surprises, such as an extremely long pause before the introduction of the work's lyrical subsidiary theme in the orchestra. The Rhapsody is not a complicated work, but its natural quality proceeds from a well-wrought balance among its sections, largely lost in Anderson's interpretation, which tries to be daring but comes off in the end as fussy.
Gershwin: Rhapsody In Bl. .has been added to your Cart. Rhapsody in Blue is one of Gershwin’s signature compositions. It was composed in 3 weeks in 1924 in response to a commission for a jazz concerto by Paul Whiteman for his orchestra. Two years later, Ferde Grofe revised the work for symphony orchestra. To say that Rhapsody in Blue became a success is a gross understatement. Remove the piano from Rhapsody in Blue, and you have the essence of An American in Paris, composed just a few years after the Rhapsody. Once again, Gershwin, a superb songwriter, gave a fabulous melody orchestral life. This album is a perfect way to begin a small collection of Gershwin works. The performances are magnificent, and the non-remastered analogue sound is Telarc at its best. How could you possibly go wrong?
