a scrappy and mystical historia. is music humanizes the element of control in rock classicism (and) turns it into a woolly but disciplined ritual. bandleader Chris Forsyth is the rare exception that proves the rule. Rightfully but somewhat reductively known as a guitar player par excellence, one listen to Forsyth’s latest double album, All Time Present, reveals that while his dazzling musicianship can always be taken for granted, it’s hardly the whole story. Forsyth’s albums-presented with his Solar Motel Band or nominally solo, as here-have always been evidence of a musical mind brimming with ideas.
Day Driving Imagination Motivation. Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, Chris Forsyth. Dreaming in the Non-Dream. The band is already cooking on a nearly Motorik rhythmic vamp, with Forsyth playing short lyric phrases all over the neck to highlight the expressiveness economy can dictate when employed properly. Amid shard-like Wurlitzer stabs, a hypnotic bassline, and a snare, hi-hat, and kick drum shuffle, the guitarist begins spiking his way forward through an improvisation that cracks the margins of the tune with a wiry swing, swagger, and bite; all the while relying stubbornly on tight utterances that express themselves in concrete terms
Chris Forsyth got his start in Brooklyn's experimental circles in the early 2000s and slowly grew into a masterful technical player. As the bandleader of Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, he composed mostly instrumental pieces that channeled both the psychedelic jamming of the Grateful Dead and the precision of art-punk guitar acts like Television. Tireless touring and prolific recorded output made for an ever-evolving sound on both solo albums and Solar Motel standouts like 2014's Intensity Ghost. Even with two tracks over 11-minutes long, the album still sounded concise. It was issued while the band was still on the road. 2019 brought the epic double album All Time Present, released as a solo outing. Clocking in at over an hour, the eight-song album included vocals on some tracks by Forsyth as well as Philly songwriter Rosali Middleman. Jason Lymangrover & Thom Jurek.
When Chris Forsyth talks about studying with Richard Lloyd, the guitarist and founding member of Television, he talks about learning grammar. Forsyth was still in the foundational stage of his own guitar playing in the days when he would meet Lloyd in Midtown for a lesson before heading to his day job at a cafe. Lloyd’s lessons are known for their focus on the hard math of how music works: the ratios, the sequences, the proportions. But for Forsyth, it apparently felt linguis.

After their set, I was fortunate enough to get to speak with Chris Forsyth himself, briefly, who retained all his easy composure from stage as he mentioned being contacted a mere week prior to the show with the opportunity to play, despite the band being on tour hiatus while working in the studio on their upcoming double album (which Forsyth confirmed will be. his first album to features vocals). You can check out the Philly based band here for more updates on their upcoming release. I'll definitely be checking back in on this one when it drops.
