Varnaline fills her need for vocal twang and conflicted self-expression that she can only find in the alt-country genre, except Varnaline delivers the goods with significantly less friction. Less grit, more moisture. Warm, soothing moisture. A salve that soon anesthetizes. It's got a pop song structure, and had me thinking I hadn't listened to Chris Isaak's Baja Sessions in a while (meaning three years). Do you have the idea yet? The slow learners say no, so let us plod further along this 15 track boulevard: "The Drunkard's Wish" is a brief banjo solo played by a retard. The not-that-horrible "Difference" cuts the retard off short, then sets into a predictable folk/slow-core stylee (probably not composed by a retard, unless said retard were highly functional). Anything from Now" does not improve the album

Released the following year, their third full-length album Sweet Life found the band writing more melodic and haunting songs, still keeping the heavy power that they had become known for. The unfortunate dissolution of Zero Hour Records left the band's status in limbo, and the band was no longer performing together; Parker, however, continued to record. Under the Varnaline moniker, he issued Songs in a Northern Key on Artemis Records in summer 2001.
For Songs In A Northern Key, Parker returns to playing most of the instruments himself, producing an eclectic record that cycles through the moody twang, patchwork rattle, and waves-of-sound guitar-rock that have all been part of the Varnaline story to date. What ties the disc together, aside from the way the songs fade into each other, is a consistently disarming handmade quality. Anders Parker's Varnaline project has been variously incarnated as a lo-fi one-man band, an assemblage of pounding Crazy Horse-style rockers, a sparse acoustic group, and a collective of experimental-pop noisemakers. For Songs In A Northern Key, Parker returns to playing most of the instruments himself, producing an eclectic record that cycles through the moody twang, patchwork rattle, and waves-of-sound guitar-rock that have all been part of the Varnaline story to date.
