Punk rock started in 1976 on New York’s Bowery, when four cretins from Queens came up with a mutant strain of blitzkrieg bubblegum. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Ramones’ toweringly influential self-titled debut, we’ve compiled a list of the 40 Greatest Punk Albums of All Time. If Ramones was Year Zero for punk rock, it didn’t come without precedent, so we included essential forebears like the Stooges, the New York Dolls, Pere Ubu and Patti Smith, artists who were punk in spirit (if not always entirely in sound) before the style really had a name. We didn’t get too fussy about all the old but really, what is punk? debates either.

Bullet for My Valentine, often abbreviated as BFMV, are a Welsh heavy metal band from Bridgend, Wales, formed in 1998. In the standard narratives delivered about the history of the last century of popular music, post-punk's influence is almost always drastically minimized, or worse, goes completely unrecognized. No other genre in the past four decades (including its namesake punk) has had such a profound and demonstrable effect on so many disparate musical styles and icons from the worlds of pop, R&B, electronic, hip-hop, metal, and, of course, rock, and yet the broad implications the movement had (and continues to have) for the wider music community are so often.

The album allows focus on the group’s blend of folk and punk, as well as Laura’s fiery and passionate vocal delivery. Lyrically, the band throws back to punk’s politically charged roots with anarchist leanings being a prominent theme, but instead of the sarcasm and irony that charged many of punk’s earliest bands, Against Me! throws itself sincerely behind the message of every track on the album. Sincerity is in very short supply nowadays, and Against Me! serves as a constant reminder as to why it is needed. With its perfect combination of punk and narrative nostalgia, the album propelled the band toward opening gigs for Social Distortion and The Boss, himself.
