A new release of Carl Davis' 2008 ballet score for the famous Alexandre Dumas story. Album of the Week, 12 August 2013. It went on to sell out two successive seasons. This is classic Carl Davis, who honed his composing craft on the brilliant Thames Silents series of soundtracks for classic silent movies. Like those scores, this richly romantic music conjures up the spirits of Verdi, Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev and others - all with Davis' distinctive flair for the dramatic. Even without the ballet visuals to go with it, this is a delightful listen, crisply performed by the Czech National Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer.

Carl Davis, CBE (born October 28, 1936) is an American-born conductor and composer who has made his home in the United Kingdom since 1961. In 1970 he married the English actress Jean Boht. He has written music for more than 100 television programmes, but is best known for creating music to accompany silent films. He also collaborated with Paul McCartney in the creation of the Liverpool Oratorio. Davis's music is published by Faber Music.
But for Carl Davis silents are golden, in a long profitable line stretching from Abel Gance's epic ''Napoleon,'' by way of ''Broken Blossoms,'' ''The Thief of Bagdad'' and ''The Eagle,'' to ''The Big Parade,'' ''Greed'' and ''Intolerance . 'For 'The Silents,' one has been able to write a big span, use a Wagnerian leitmotif system, establish a code of themes that recur, undergo variation, combine. That's been fun. ''In a contemporary film with dialogue and sound effects, one isn't nearly given so much opportunity. Also performing these silents live is very exciting: like an opera without voices.
Carl Davis spoke to Silent London about scoring these films. Musically, Garbo always gets special treatment, he says. It’s something to do with her lighting and her charisma, which calls for music with a special glow. Carl Davis Greta Garbo Philharmonia Orhestra Royal Festival hall silent film.
