Symphonie concertante for piano and orchestra was a Koussevitzky commission from 1931. Incidentally, Ravel's two Piano Concertos were composed between 1929 and 1931 and both had, like Schmitt's Symphony concertante, their premiere in 1932. What developed into a Symphonie concertante was first commissioned as a plain piano concerto, but Schmitt had no attraction to the traditional form and preferred to embed the piano into the orchestral texture. Soirs is a much earlier composition, that first came into being in the form of a suite of 10 piano pieces, of which Schmitt orchestrated eight.
