A Ghost Is Born is the fifth studio album by American alternative rock band Wilco. Released on June 22, 2004, it features singer Jeff Tweedy on lead guitar more than any previous Wilco album. The band streamed the album online free, and offered a five-song EP to purchasers. Tweedy entered a rehab clinic shortly before the release of the album, delaying its release by two weeks. It also shortened its promotional tour

A Ghost Is Born, released on June 22, 2004, is Wilco’s fifth studio album. It is the band’s first album under their new contract with the music label Nonesuch. In 2005, the album won two Grammy Awards for Best Alternative Music Album and Best Recording Package. Ghost, much like Wilco’s previous album, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, was well-received by critics. It’s not experiment for experiment’s sake. There’s a sense that every note and sound on Ghost, even the spontaneous ones, have been selected for private but rigorous reasons. A drum tap here, a glimmering hammer dulcimer there, a jab of distorted guitar, an echo suddenly opening new spaces -on Ghost, they say what words cannot.

It can be argued, therefore, that Yankee Hotel Foxtrot really wasn't as great as an album as it was made out to be - especially as great of an album as it suddenly seemed to be to everyone once year-end lists came out. Originally somewhat glossed over upon its initial release, except for people who had already been Wilco fans (who gobbled it up immediately), it wasn't until the full story of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot came about that the true championing of the band began

You know, I really hate to say this about an album, but best thing about A Ghost is Born is that, whether you ignore the lyrics or not, the songs all remain the same as they would have otherwise. Quite a lot of Tweedy's lyrics seem to be nonsense ("Spiders are filling out tax returns, Spinning out webs of deductions and melodies, On a private beach in Michigan"). If there is a backstory or point to A Ghost is Born, than I have certainly missed something by examining these lyrics for several days.

A Ghost Is Born is Wilco's breakdown album. Jeff Tweedy's attempts to put painkiller addiction migraine blues on a platter, warts and all. Ranging from the tender folky beauty of Muzzle Of Bees, which weaves intricate guitar picking with percussion bearing the hallmark of Jim O'Rourke (his influence is felt across the record) to the lockdown depression of a relationship on the brink of physical destruction on At Least That's What You Said, with its circling piano and guitar, eventually whirring into a spastic guitar solo by Tweedy which owes as much to Neil Young as it does to more modern left field sonic guitarists. The feeling of an album, songs sitting together in one landscape, is missing from AGIB, but with a group as skilled as Wilco, an experimental, unhinged feel is most welcome. Especially as Tweedy threw the wheel back towards the middle of the road after this release.
To me, the album's strong points lie in the two longest songs, "Spiders" and "Less Than You Think". The former being the most upbeat of the bunch, and the latter being extremely emotional for me, especially because it is so devoid of emotion in the 11 minutes of noise. It makes my mind wander to a place where all life is dead, where there are only machines. A place where death hangs in the air, where it weighs upon the listener like a heavy weight. I find it almost scary because of how real it is in my head. The opening combination of "At Least That's What You Said" and "Hell is Chrome" in my opinion perfectly set the tone for what the rest of the album is going to be, sad and slow. What keeps me from giving this album 5 stars are the songs in between the beginning and end. The album runs too long for me, and I feel like if the more upbeat songs like "Company in my Back" and "I'm a Wheel" were removed from the album, it would flow better, and in my opinion hit the high points faster. In the end, that's what stops this from being a masterpiece, if I am listening to an album and I'm just waiting for a song I like better to come on, that is just wasted time on an album. That being said, this is still a really good album that is worth the buy.
