Piano Concerto No. 83: Allegretto grazioso. I was just listening earlier today to a Brahms 4th with Furtwaengler and the same orchestra, his own Berlin, a recording of the same live, wartime vintage, and how much more stately, dignified, anguished and moving-in a word, how much more Brahmsian-the symphony sounded. To top it off, the half-baked sonics in the concerto make the performance seem like the depiction of amateur hour in a Visconti film. To get the sound out of my ears, I instinctively reached for Elly Ney, also with the Berlin, from 1939 under Max Fiedler.

The Piano Concerto No. 2 in B♭ major, Op. 83, by Johannes Brahms is separated by a gap of 22 years from his first piano concerto. Brahms began work on the piece in 1878 and completed it in 1881 while in Pressbaum near Vienna. It is dedicated to his teacher, Eduard Marxsen. The public premiere of the concerto was given in Budapest on 9 November 1881, with Brahms as soloist and the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, and was an immediate success. He proceeded to perform the piece in many cities across Europe.
Концерт для ф-но с оркестром №2 B-dur, o. 3 – IV. Эдвин Фишер, Венский филармонический оркестр, дир. Вильгельм Фуртвенглер Иоганнес Брамс. Концерт №2 для ф-но с оркестром II. Allegro apassionato.
Testament’s restoration of The 1942 Fischer/Furtwängler Brahms Second Piano Concerto was made from the same source material used for Deutsche Grammophon’s 1989 series devoted to the conductor’s wartime Berlin Philharmonic broadcasts. The new transfer reveals more background hiss, yet differs little from its predecessor in terms of overall ambience and timbre. The performance crackles with spontaneity and thrust, as soloist and conductor push each other to expressive heights
