Alice Coote is the darling of the world's opera stages and recital halls. Her solo recordings are rare events. In this much-anticipated French songbook, Graham Johnson lends his incomparable insight to this most remarkable of talents on an emotional roller coaster through twenty-three songs of Gallic love in all its guises. Performer: Alice Coote, Graham Johnson. Alice Coote's L'heure exquise - A French Songbook. is filled w/wonderful music. Glad I've added to my collection.

If you didn't know this was Alice Cooper, you'd be completely fooled by the exuberant youthfulness that lies within. Some of the roughest guitar tones since "Muscle of Love". Grade: A "Man of the Year" - An unusual mixture of nu-school pop punk & classic "Billion Dollar Babies" era backing vocals/lead guitar. This could potentially be a crossover single for the eMpTyVee generation. Alice's vocals are strangely VERY young sounding & his approach overall is like nothing you've heard him sing before.

The French song repertory, so ably represented here by mezzo-soprano Alice Coote, shows remarkable continuity over the near-century represented by the works on this album. Tonally the songs very early on used an extended-harmony idiom that toward the Belle Epoque readily assimilated popular influences, and the mood is nicely summed up in a quotation from Francis Poulenc included in the booklet: "Our composers too write profound music, but when they do, it is leavened with that lightness of spirit without which life would be unendurable.

Alice Coote: Alcina: Verdi Prati. Her many recordings and DVD appearances include on CD: an album of English Song, The Power of Love (Hyperion); Songs by Robert Schumann and Gustav Mahler (EMI); Händel’s Messiah and Mahler 2 (EMI); Angel Dream of Gerontius and The Apostles (Hallé); Composer Ariadne auf Naxos (Chandos); Orfeo (Virgin Classics); Choice.
