Founded in 1885, the mission of the Woman& exchange is helping other to help themselves. We do this by providing a place to shop, consign, volunteer and donate. Each month we feature local artists and we are proud to provide a distinctive retail venue for local seamstresses and consignors. In addition to our beautiful shop, we also have an award winning tea room. A lovely eatery for casual and sumptuous meals and desserts, all served by a volunteer staff of Woman’s Exchange members. Memphis Rap was crucial in the Horrorcore movement, as the genre's dark, sinister sound was perfectly suited for the style's frightening lyrics. Perhaps most notably, it was Memphis Rap, along with Miami Bass, that laid the groundwork for Crunk. What's more, Memphis Rap was the first style of rap to feature true tongue twisting. A buddy of mine and I went to the exchange yesterday. I've been to Memphis several times but this was my first time visiting this museum and had actually never heard of it. We got there around 3:30 pm and purchased our tickets and started watching the video. And while the museum did devote parts to the role of slavery in the cotton industry, when we left the museum, neither of us felt that we had gotten the whole story.
The exchange also promoted "Memphis cotton" in major markets such as New York and London. When the exchanges decided to have separate locations, the Memphis Cotton Exchange had a multi-story building constructed on Union Avenue; the Cotton Exchange Building opened in 1922. Cotton trading was done on the first floor, and only members of the exchange were allowed to trade there.
