Undercurrent is an album by American pianist Kenny Drew that was recorded in 1960 and released by Blue Note in 1961. It was Drew's last album for the label and his last album recorded in the . before moving to Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1961. All tracks written by Kenny Drew. Freddie Hubbard – trumpet. Hank Mobley – tenor saxophone.

Kenny Drew's seventh recording as a leader is significant for many reasons, not the least of which that it is one of the finest Blue Note hard bop statements in either of their catalogs. Teamed with rising young star, trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, and the wonderful tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley fresh off stints with Donald Byrd and Art Blakey, Drew is joining the ranks of the premier mainstream jazz pianists just prior to moving permanently to Europe. He's a complementary piece of the puzzle as a player, but stirs the drink as the composer of all of these very fine hard bop vehicles.

Undercurrent is an album by American pianist Kenny Drew recorded in 1960 and released on the Blue Note label. It would be Drew's second and last effort for the label, and his last album recorded in the US before his 1961 move to Copenhagen. On the 2007 CD reissue, the album is erroneously given the catalogue number 84101 (Royal Flush) instead of its own 84059.

A truly stellar set of straight-up Hard Bop at its finest, from an assemblage of musicians that unfortunately only made their way onto wax together on this one album. While my first inclination is to say that even though Drew is the bandleader, that this album really belongs to Mobley and especially Hubbard, upon repeated listenings it becomes apparent that all five players are in top form and working together in a symbiosis that makes the sum truly greater than its parts. An easy one to overlook because of the relatively lower position that Drew has generally been given in the pantheon of great jazz musicians, but to do so would be to deprive yourself of one of the greatest, and sadly most under-rated, Hard Bop albums in the entire Blue Note catalog.
Oh yes this is truly a great recording which as it happened was a quick impulse buy as the record store was closing. What a choice in hindsight. I was not familiar with the Drew name but Freddie Hubbard, Hank Mobley were favourites and in the mix are Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes on drums so it could hardly be a tame offering...and it isn't. Buy with confidence, sit back and drop the needle into the groove. Its simply wonderful. Grooving' the blues is my particular favourite but the offering as a whole is so satisfying. Perhaps its one of those Blue Note recordings that has just not hit the main page! Why? If you love Blue Note then this is right in there. Buy it and love it.
