Le Grand Macabre (1974–77, revised version 1996) is the only opera by Hungarian composer György Ligeti. The opera has two acts, and its libretto – based on the 1934 play La balade du grand macabre by Michel De Ghelderode – was written by Ligeti in collaboration with Michael Meschke, director of the Stockholm puppet theatre.

Opera: Le Grande Macabre. Composer: Ligeti György. Libretto: György Ligeti, Michael Meschke based on the 1934 play La balade du grand macabre by Michel De Ghelderode. Venue & Opera Company: Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona. Recorded: November 2011.

Only 2 left in stock (more on the way). Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu presents Gyorgy Ligeti's sole opera "Le grand macabre" in a stunningly imaginative and highly theatrical production by La Fura dels Baus. The absurd-tragicomical masterpiece, which Ligeti called an "anti-anti-opera," blends popular theatre, comics, pop art, cabaret, caricature, and the Apocalypse with fascinating ease. Masterfully rendering the colorful score are the orchestra and chorus of the Liceu, under the baton of conductor Michael Boder.

Le Grand Macabre, by the Hungarian composer György Ligeti, is based on La Ballade du Grand Macabre by Michel de Ghelderode. From its first showing in Stockholm in 1978 it attained the highest echelons of the contemporary operatic repertoire. Since then numerous productions have been staged in the world's leading opera houses
