Noh Theatre is a very particular type of theatre typical of the Japanese spirit, with its magnificent costumes and its extremely slow pace. It takes time to get used to understand the spirit of this very particular theatre. The musical ensemble accompanying the actors/singers is called the hayashi and has four musicians: a nohkan player and three percussionists. The nohkan is a bamboo transverse flute used only in Noh and is deliberately made to distort the pitch. It does not accompany vocal sections; it is used to set the moods for pieces, scenes, or dances.

This music genre first gained momentum when the Jamaican reggae legend Bob Marley visited Japan in 1979. During his trip, he planned to attend a concert by Flower Travellin' Band, but got informed that by then the group had already disbanded. Fortunately, he happened to meet a famed Japanese percussionist Pecker which led to a fruitful collaboration between acclaimed Japanese and Jamaican artists. There’s no way I could start a post like this without mentioning our very own Machaco, who’s behind the hours of pitch-perfect Japanese pronunciation audio over at LinguaLift.
Everybody from the artists involved to the recording studio crew to the PR people to the label generously donated their time and services to help Sakairi in her mission and the result is a heartwarming collection of songs that heals the soul and helps those in need; all proceeds from the sale of this album will be directed to Habitat For Humanity, Japan. The majority of the music on Home was written on short notice, but these aren't throwaway tunes. In fact, several artists really hit compositional pay dirt on this project.
