One of the world's finest conductors, with La Scala, the Vienna and Berlin Philharmonics, and his own orchestra in Lucerne. Claudio Abbado, who has died aged 80, was not only among the greatest of conductors; in his last decade, after suffering from very severe illness, he raised a superband of players all gathered together for his sake, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, to heights that many listeners have never experienced in other orchestral concerts

Claudio Abbado was one of the most influential conductors of the 20th century, and was music director/chief conductor of some of the world's best the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. Claudio Abbado, Cavaliere di Gran Croce OMRI (Italian: ; 26 June 1933 – 20 January 2014) was an Italian conductor. He served as music director of the La Scala opera house in Milan, principal conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra, principal guest conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, music director of the Vienna State Opera, and principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra from 1989 to 2002.

Through much of his recording career, Claudio Abbado was most closely associated with Deutsche Grammophon. recordings Abbado made in the last decade of his life with the Orchestra Mozart. There is no Bruckner or Mahler here, but there is a Beethoven symphony, a one-off Ninth, with the Berlin orchestra and a stellar quartet of soloists – Eaglen, Meier, Heppner and Terfel – recorded in Salzburg in 1996 and conveying an electric sense of occasion.
